Why is RTC
important?
Too much waste
Canada needs legislative reform to change how it deals with textile waste. Too many single-use textiles end in landfills. Canadians need to come together to phase out single-use textiles similar to what was done with single-use plastics ban of 2021.
Institutions pollute
We need to pay attention to hidden sources of pollution: individual recycling initiatives are not sufficient to counter pollution caused by institutional actors
Climate change
The manufacturing process of disposable textiles is one of the greatest sources of CO2, greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. Disposable textiles need to constantly be replaced, thus increasing their carbon footprint.
Longer life cycles
We need to pay attention to hidden sources of pollution: individual recycling initiatives are not sufficient to counter pollution caused by institutional actors
Shorter supply chains
Sustainable textiles are one of the ready-to-go solutions in preparing for the next pandemic: they are less dependent on global supply chains and are as safe as their disposable equivalents
Circular economy
Reusable textiles create a local economy and create blue-collar jobs around institutions like hospitals and long-term care homes and are still cheaper per-use than disposable textiles.
